Brian C. Duffy

partner

Brian C. Duffy is a trial lawyer with experience in civil cases of all shapes and sizes - from cases in the United States Supreme Court and with judgments and settlements of tens of millions of dollars to a variety of smaller disputes in South Carolina's trial courts and administrative law courts. This breadth of experience helps Brian toward his single goal in every case no matter the size of the case or type of client: to get the best possible result for his client. With a practice of representing both plaintiffs and defendants, Brian brings valuable insight to matters which helps him and his clients achieve that goal.

Brian handles a variety of matters but accepts an engagement only where he and his firm can make a difference for their client. Brian handles cases involving banks and other lenders, class actions, defamation and serious personal injury claims, medical malpractice, products liability, real property and construction issues, securities claims, will contests and other probate litigation, and numerous commercial disputes. Many of the commercial disputes involve claims not only for breaches of contract or of fiduciary duty, but for violations of South Carolina's Trade Secrets Act and its Unfair Trade Practices Act as well.

Brian earned the highest rating from the local legal community when he received Martindale-Hubbel's AV rating. Brian has served for years on the Executive Committee of the Charleston County Bar Association and he has served as an Adjunct Professor of Commercial Law at the Charleston School of Law. Brian is a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference, the Federal Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Charleston County Bar Association. A member of the South Carolina Bar and the District of Columbia Bar, Brian is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, as well as South Carolina's state and federal trial courts and appellate courts, among many others.

Brian is a former partner of Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough, LLP. Prior to joining Nelson Mullins, he was associated with Arnold & Porter LLP in Washington, D.C. Brian also served as associate counsel of the Judicial Review Commission on Foreign Assets Control and was a law clerk to The Honorable Karen LeCraft Henderson of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Earlier in his career, Brian served as a law clerk to The Honorable C. Lynwood Smith, Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. Brian earned a Juris Doctor from the Vanderbilt University Law School where he was a John W. Wade Scholar and the Notes Editor of Vanderbilt Law Review. Brian earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, with highest distinction, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Brian is active in his hometown community. He serves on various committees and boards of non-profit organizations. He and his wife, Medéa, are the parents of three young children.
